Unveiling the Divide
Mormons' Beliefs Versus Sound Doctrine
Mormonism presents a theological system that dramatically diverges from orthodox Christianity in multiple fundamental areas. While Mormons resist being labeled a cult and consider themselves Christians, their beliefs differ dramatically from traditional Christianity in almost every area. They may use similar terminology, but their underlying theological framework is fundamentally unorthodox.
Key theological distinctions include: 1) A radically different conception of God – Mormons are polytheists, while Christians are monotheists; 2) A works-based salvation plan, contrary to salvation by grace; 3) A different view of the Bible, which they see as imperfect; 4) A unique understanding of Jesus, denying the virgin birth and claiming Jesus and Lucifer are brothers; and 5) An anthropology that views humans as essentially good “Gods in embryo”, rather than fallen, sinful creatures.
For instance, Mormons believe Jesus was “God evolved” and that God himself was once human. They even suggest unusual theological claims, such as that when one sees the Father in Heaven, one will see Adam, and when seeing the Mother who bears one’s spirit, one will see Eve. Notably, throughout three millennia of Judeo-Christian history, no orthodox group has held beliefs similar to those now espoused by LDS leaders. Simply claiming orthodoxy does not make it so –“a cow claiming to be a cat does not make it one”
